Join us for a roundtable discussion presented by the American Federation of Arts on the occasion of Abstract Expressionists: The Women
Long Legacies: American Abstract Women Painters, Past and Present
The event is organized in conjunction with the American Federation of Arts (AFA) in honor of its nationwide touring exhibition, Abstract Expressionists: The Women (2025–2027), which spotlights nearly fifty paintings made by thirty-two accomplished female artists between the 1940s and 1970s. Presented in collaboration with the Art Students League of New York, this program celebrates the enduring legacy of women who shaped, and continue to shape, the evolution of abstraction in American art.
This roundtable discussion will feature:
- Christine Berry, Co-Founder, Berry Campbell Gallery
- Jaime DeSimone, Chief Curator, Farnsworth Museum of Art (Maine)
- A’Driane Nieves, Philadelphia-based artist
- Moderated by: Aliza Rachel Edelman, Ph.D., Co-Chief Editor, Woman’s Art Journal
Bringing together leading scholars, gallerists, and artists, this conversation will consider the lasting impact made by women abstractionists on the course of American modern and contemporary art. Inspired by their profound yet understudied contributions to postwar art, the panel will explore persistent gaps in the art historical canon while examining the role gender continues to play in the art world today.
This program is free and open to the public with registration.
